Sonoma or Napa? What 18 Years as a Wine Country Wedding Photographer Has Taught Me
Every couple planning a wine country wedding asks me some version of the same question. It usually comes up early in our first conversation, somewhere between talking about their vision and what they are most nervous about. The question is simple: should we get married in Sonoma or Napa?
I have been a wedding photographer in Sonoma County and Napa Valley for over 18 years. I have photographed vineyard ceremonies in the golden afternoon light of Kunde Family Winery, intimate receptions tucked into the hills above Calistoga, and everything in between.
And what I can tell you is that both regions are extraordinary, and the right answer depends entirely on who you are as a couple.
So let me give you the honest answer I give every client who asks.
What Sonoma Feels Like (From Behind a Camera)
If I had to describe photographing weddings in Sonoma County in one word, it would be: breathing room.
Sonoma has a wildness to it that Napa does not. The landscape is more varied, the pace is a little slower, and the venues tend to have that lived-in beauty you cannot manufacture. When I am photographing a wedding at a Sonoma property, there is often an open meadow just beyond the ceremony site, or a grove of old oaks that catches the afternoon light in a way that makes every frame feel effortless.
Sonoma is also where I see couples exhale. The wine country is gorgeous everywhere, but Sonoma has a warmth to it that is less about impressing people and more about gathering them. That comes through in the photographs.
As a Sonoma County wedding photographer, the venues I return to most often are the ones that offer genuine variety within the property. Sprawling estates where you can move from the shade of a barn to an open vineyard to a hillside view, all within a ten-minute walk. That kind of built-in variety means your gallery will feel layered and rich, not repetitive.
Sonoma is a great fit if:
You want something that feels personal and a little unfussy
Your guest list skews toward experience over spectacle
You love the idea of your photos feeling timeless rather than trendy
You are drawn to venues with soul, not just scenery
What Napa Feels Like (From Behind a Camera)
Napa Valley is a different kind of beautiful, and I say that as someone who deeply loves it.
Where Sonoma breathes, Napa dazzles. The light is golden and generous and absolutely unforgiving to any photographer who does not know how to work with it.
The estates are grand, the architecture is more formal, and there is an elevated quality to almost everything, from the florals to the tablescapes to the way guests arrive. Photographing weddings in Napa Valley means leaning into that luxury, not fighting it.
As a Napa Valley wedding photographer, I find that the couples who choose Napa usually have a very clear visual they are working toward. They have saved images, they have been to Napa before, they know what the light looks like over the vineyards at 6 p.m. in September. That specificity is something I love working with, because it means we are building toward a shared vision from the very first call.
Napa also rewards photographers who do their homework on timing. The light in the valley moves quickly in the late afternoon, and knowing exactly when and where to position a couple during golden hour is something I have spent nearly two decades refining. Those are the images couples print and frame.
Napa is a great fit if:
You want your wedding to feel grand and deeply intentional
You are comfortable with a more formal atmosphere
You are planning a larger guest list and need venues that can hold the scale
You want photographs that feel cinematic and elevated
The One Thing Both Have in Common
Whether you are planning a Sonoma wedding or a Napa Valley wedding, the photographs are going to be shaped by one thing above everything else: the light.
Wine country light is genuinely special. It is warm and hazy and directional in a way that flatters everyone. It is part of why so many couples travel from all over the country to get married here, even when they have no personal connection to California. They have seen the photographs and they want their own version of that golden afternoon hour.
What changes is how you use it. In Sonoma, the light often filters through oak trees and over rolling hills. In Napa, it sweeps across flat vineyards and bounces off the limestone and stucco of the estates. Both are gorgeous. Both reward a photographer who is paying attention.
How to Choose: A Few Honest Questions
Here is what I ask couples who are still deciding between the two:
What does your guest experience look like? If you want your guests to feel welcomed and relaxed, Sonoma often edges ahead. If you want them to feel swept away by something extraordinary, Napa delivers.
How do you feel about formality? There is nothing wrong with wanting a wedding that feels polished and produced. But if the idea of a very structured day feels stressful rather than exciting, Sonoma's more relaxed pace might serve you better.
Where do you want to spend your photography time? Some of my favorite editorial moments in Napa happen during the pre-ceremony window when the light is still fresh and the vineyards are quiet. In Sonoma, I often find my best frames during cocktail hour, when the group is loose and the golden hour light is doing exactly what it should.
A Note on Booking a Wine Country Wedding Photographer
One of the most common questions I hear from couples who are just starting to plan is how far in advance they should book a photographer for a wine country wedding.
My honest answer: if you are planning a wedding at a well-known venue in Sonoma County or Napa Valley during peak season, which runs from May through October, you should expect that top photographers are looking at a 12 to 18 month booking window. I am based in Sonoma County and work throughout the greater wine country region, and my calendar fills early, especially for summer and fall dates.
If you are in the early stages of planning and your date is within the next 12 months, do not wait. Reach out, have the conversation, and let us figure out if we are the right fit. That relationship is the thing I care about most, because when the day actually comes, I want you to feel completely at ease with me.
