Elizabeth and Daniel, A Montage Healdsburg Wedding in October

Some wedding days hold two entirely different feelings inside them, and Elizabeth and Daniel's October wedding was one of those. It began high on the oak studded hillsides above the Russian River Valley at Montage Healdsburg, where the light is wide and the architecture is quiet and modern and the whole valley opens up beneath you. It ended inside a Tuscan style villa, warm and old world and full of texture, where the evening felt like it belonged to another country entirely. Two settings, one day, one couple, and a contrast that turned out to be the whole story.

We photograph a great deal in Sonoma County, and Healdsburg in October is one of our favorite chapters of the year. The heat has softened. The vineyards have turned gold and rust and deep red. The sun sits lower and lands on everything gently, and the evenings arrive earlier and cooler than people expect. Elizabeth and Daniel chose that season and those two places on purpose, and our work was to move them through the day calmly enough that they never had to think about logistics for a single minute.

The Morning, Unhurried on Purpose

A two location wedding day only feels effortless if the morning is protected, so that is where we started. We arrived early, before the room filled up, and gave the first stretch of time to the quiet things. The dress waiting in the light. The rings. The paper. Anything handed down. Those frames matter more than people imagine on the morning itself, because they are the ones that place the day in a particular year and a particular family.

Montage Healdsburg is generous with light. The rooms open toward the hillside, and by mid morning there is soft, indirect sun coming through from almost every direction, which means nobody has to be arranged near a window to look beautiful. We could let the morning be exactly what it was, people talking over each other, someone laughing, a mother sitting down for a minute because she needed to. That is the getting ready hour we want. Not staged, simply noticed.

The First Look Above the Valley

When a day has two homes, a first look stops being a preference and becomes the thing that makes the rest of the schedule possible. It moves portraits earlier, it frees the hour after the ceremony, and on this particular day it meant we could use both properties properly instead of racing one of them.

We placed them out on the hillside where the oaks break the light and the valley falls away behind. Our job in a moment like that is small and specific. Bring them there, tell them where to stand, and then step back far enough that they forget we are working. The best first looks are not directed. They are given room.

A Ceremony Held by Oaks

An October ceremony in Healdsburg has a particular quality. The sun is already on its way down by late afternoon, the hills go warm and dusty gold, and the oaks throw long soft shadows across everything. There is no harshness left in the light by then. It is one of the reasons we love photographing this county in the fall, and it is one of the reasons we guide couples to build an autumn ceremony earlier than they think they need to.

What we remember most about the ceremony is how quiet it was. Not silent, but settled. Guests who had traveled to be there, seated in the open air with a whole valley behind them, and two people at the front of it saying true things out loud. We work almost invisibly during a ceremony. Long lenses, soft footsteps, nothing at all between the two of them and the people who came.

Family photographs came directly afterward, while everyone was still gathered and nobody had wandered toward a drink yet. We build the list weeks in advance, group it so the largest configurations happen first, and ask each side to name one person who can find their own family in a crowd. Handled that way, family photographs take about twenty five minutes and give the couple their cocktail hour back. Handled any other way, the same photographs take an hour, and the couple never sees their own party.

Moving Between Two Settings

This is the part of a two location day that couples worry about, and honestly it is the part we worry about least, because it is the part that responds best to planning. The move between Montage Healdsburg and the villa was built into the timeline months ahead, with real travel time and a buffer on top of it, so that nobody was watching a clock and no one had to be hurried into a car.

Here is what we tell every couple considering two locations. Double whatever the map application tells you. Country roads in Sonoma County are narrow and slow, guests will need directions in writing, and a wedding party takes far longer to load than a family does. Then add fifteen minutes on the far side for everyone to arrive, find the light, and breathe. If the transition is planned properly it becomes one of the loveliest stretches of the whole day, a small pocket of quiet in the middle of everything.

And then the villa. After a whole afternoon of open sky and clean modern lines, walking into warm stucco, old wood, terracotta and courtyard shadow is genuinely startling in the best way. The two settings did not compete with each other. They gave the day two distinct chapters, and the images from each half sit beside each other in the gallery like two halves of the same story.

Golden Hour Over the Russian River Valley

We protect twenty minutes of golden hour for every couple we photograph, and on a hillside above the Russian River Valley in October it is the most productive twenty minutes of the entire day. The valley holds the last of the sun long after the ground has gone into shadow, the air turns the color of honey, and two people who have been surrounded by everyone they love since morning finally get to be alone together.

Almost every couple tells us afterward that this was the part they did not expect to need. They step away from the party believing they are doing it for the photographs, and they come back saying it was the first moment all day that felt like theirs. We keep it short on purpose. Twenty minutes, no agenda, very little direction. The light does most of the work.

The Reception, Warm and Old World

An evening inside a villa photographs unlike anything else in Sonoma County. The surfaces are warm rather than white, candlelight behaves beautifully against plaster and stone, and the room holds the glow instead of scattering it. October helps here too. Night comes early enough that the dinner hour is properly dark and properly lit, which is exactly what you want for toasts and dancing.

We photograph a reception the way we photograph a family gathering, staying close to the emotion and out of the way of the celebration. The speeches, the faces listening to the speeches, the hands on shoulders, the grandparents who stayed long past their bedtime, the friends who never left the floor. This is the material a gallery is really made of, and it is what people return to years later far more often than the portraits.

What This Day Taught Us

A wedding with two locations is not a harder day. It is a day that asks for more guidance, which is a very different thing. Everything that made Elizabeth and Daniel's wedding feel unhurried was decided months before anyone put a dress on. The ceremony time built backward from an October sunset. The first look placed where it would free the afternoon. Real travel time written into the schedule instead of hoped for. A family list settled well in advance. Twenty minutes of golden hour defended like it mattered, because it does.

None of that is glamorous, and all of it is why the day felt calm. Our couples do not hire us for a schedule, but the schedule is a large part of what they are actually buying. It is the difference between being present at your own wedding and managing it. Elizabeth and Daniel were present all day, and you can see it in every frame.

Montage Healdsburg Questions

Frequently Asked

What is Montage Healdsburg like to photograph?

It is one of the most generous properties in Sonoma County for light. The resort sits on oak studded hillsides above the Russian River Valley, so you have wide open views, mature oak woodland, and clean modern architecture within a short walk of each other. The rooms open toward the hillside and fill with soft indirect light through the morning, which makes getting ready coverage easy and unforced.

Is a two location wedding day difficult to photograph?

Not when it is planned properly. A second location asks for more guidance rather than more difficulty. We build the timeline backward from sunset, place the first look so the afternoon stays open, write real travel time into the schedule, and coordinate the whole plan with your planner well in advance so nobody is improvising on the day.

How much travel time should we build in between two venues?

Double whatever your map application says, then add fifteen minutes on the far side. Sonoma County roads are narrow and slow, a wedding party loads more slowly than a family, and guests need written directions. That buffer is what keeps a two location day feeling calm rather than rushed.

What is an October wedding in Healdsburg like?

October is one of the loveliest months in Sonoma County. The heat has softened, the vineyards have turned gold and rust and red, and the sun sits low enough that afternoon light is warm rather than harsh. Sunset arrives earlier than in summer, so ceremonies generally need to start earlier, and evenings get genuinely cool, which is worth planning wraps and heaters for.

Do you photograph weddings at Montage Healdsburg and other Healdsburg venues?

Yes. Kreate Photography has photographed weddings across Healdsburg, Sonoma County, Napa Valley, and the Bay Area since 2008, and our team knows these properties, their light, and their timing well. We are glad to walk a venue with you if you are still deciding.
