One of the questions I hear most often from couples planning a Sea Ranch wedding or elopement is:
“Where should we take our photos?”
After photographing weddings and elopements here for well over a decade, I’ve learned that the answer isn’t about finding one iconic location. It’s about creating a thoughtful experience using a handful of beautiful places that complement one another.
Sea Ranch is full of hidden gems. Dramatic coastlines. Quiet meadows. Thoughtfully designed architecture. Windswept bluffs. Forest trails. Private beaches.
The magic comes from knowing which locations work best together, and how to time them throughout your wedding day.
Here are some of my favorite places to photograph throughout Sea Ranch and the surrounding Sonoma Coast.
Sea Ranch Lodge
The Sea Ranch Lodge is easily one of the most beautiful wedding venues on the Northern California coast.
It blends modern architecture with the surrounding landscape in a way that feels timeless and understated. Whether you’re hosting your entire wedding here or simply stopping by for portraits, it offers incredible variety within a short walk.
Some of my favorite locations include:
- The ocean bluffs
- Native coastal grasses
- The private cove
- Winding walking paths
- The front and side decks
- The iconic wooden arch
- Warm wood interiors
- Modern architecture overlooking the Pacific
The beauty of the Lodge is that every direction offers something different while still feeling cohesive.
Salt Point Trail
Just south of Stump Beach sits one of my favorite portrait locations along the Sonoma Coast.
Salt Point Trail offers dramatic cliff edges, rugged coastline, rolling bluffs, native cypress, forest trails, and incredible ocean views without requiring an extensive hike.
For couples wanting that iconic Northern California coastal feeling, this location rarely disappoints.
The variety here makes it perfect for engagement sessions, elopements, or sunset wedding portraits.
Stump Beach
If you’re looking for a quieter stretch of coastline, Stump Beach is a wonderful option.
The trail leads through beautiful coastal vegetation before opening to expansive ocean views and secluded beaches below.
It’s peaceful, naturally beautiful, and often less crowded than many nearby beaches.
Phillips Gulch
Phillips Gulch feels tucked away from the world.
Open meadows, dramatic cliffs, and panoramic ocean views create an incredible backdrop for portraits while still feeling intimate and relaxed.
It’s one of those locations that photographs beautifully in almost every season.
The Bluff Trails
Some of my favorite photographs at Sea Ranch aren’t taken at famous landmarks.
They’re made while simply walking.
The bluff trails that weave throughout Sea Ranch offer weathered fences, windswept grasses, quiet overlooks, native cypress trees, and endless ocean views.
These in-between moments often become my couples’ favorite images because they capture the feeling of being at Sea Ranch, not just standing in front of it.
Private Vacation Homes
Many couples choose to stay in a private Sea Ranch home for the weekend, and I always encourage incorporating it into the story.
Some of my favorite moments happen before the ceremony. Morning coffee on the deck. Reading letters together. Getting ready with family. Dinner around a long table. Watching the sunset after everyone has gone home.
These homes often become just as meaningful as the ceremony location itself.
My Advice: Choose Fewer Locations
One of the biggest mistakes couples make is trying to see everything.
Sea Ranch isn’t meant to be rushed.
Rather than visiting six or seven locations, I typically recommend choosing two to four meaningful places and giving yourselves time to simply enjoy them.
The slower the experience feels, the more natural your photographs become.
Why Local Experience Matters
Sea Ranch is unlike almost anywhere else in California. The wind changes quickly. Fog moves in unexpectedly. Light shifts throughout the day. Some trails are exposed while others are sheltered.
Knowing how these locations work together makes an enormous difference when building your timeline.
