There are a handful of venues in Sonoma County that I could walk through with my eyes closed, and Barndiva is at the top of that list. I have been photographing weddings in that garden for eight years now, through every season, in every kind of light, and it still surprises me. When Olivia and Brooks told me they were getting married there, I already knew where the sun would fall at five o'clock and which corner of the garden would glow at the end of the night. That is the quiet advantage of knowing a place well. It means I can stop thinking about logistics and pay attention to the people.
Olivia and Brooks met a decade ago at Outside Lands in San Francisco through mutual friends, and they started dating five years later when Olivia moved back to the Bay Area from the East Coast. It Started With Paper
Before a single photograph is taken on a wedding day, I usually already know what the day is going to feel like, because the paper tells me. Olivia and Brooks chose an invitation suite in soft greens and warm oranges with citrus and garden florals running through it, and that palette carried all the way from the mailbox to the last lantern lit in the garden at Barndiva.
I photograph flat lays first thing in the morning for a reason. It is not just about pretty stationery. Those images anchor the whole gallery, and they are almost always the frames that get published later. In this case, they were.
The gown was Mira Zwillinger, all texture and movement, the kind of dress that changes completely depending on where you stand. Hanging in the window at Ivy House, the vine covered home Olivia's family rented for the weekend, it looked like something out of a painting.
Morning at Ivy House
Getting ready is my favorite hour of the day, and it is also the hour most couples underestimate. There is a particular kind of light in an old Healdsburg house in the morning, and there is a particular kind of energy when everyone who loves you is in one room at the same time. Across town, Brooks and his groomsmen were doing the same thing in their own way, which is to say slowly, with a lot of laughing and one person who could not get his bow tie right. I photograph the guys the same way I photograph everyone else. I stay out of the way, I keep it light, and I let the room be what it already is.
Two Ceremonies, On Purpose
Two days before the celebration at Barndiva, Olivia and Brooks were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Healdsburg with only immediate family in the room. St. Paul's matters to Olivia. She was confirmed there and her parents are still active members. She walked over from Ivy House with her father, and the whole small town honked and waved as they went.

The Celebration at Barndiva
